Unique design hotel - enormous rooms”
The hotel is slightly out of the way, but opposite the Imperial Gardens which, despite what the guidebooks tell you, is a great morning walk. Japan surprisingly suffers from a lack of design hotels, but The Screen offers everything the contemporary design-focused traveller wants. Each room has been designed by an international designer with a particular theme or emotion in mind. We opted for Room 301 designed by Katsunori Suzuki of Japan. The minimalistic colour scheme and smooth lines were amazing, and the huge bedroom window overlooking the Shimogoryo Shrine was a great sight to wake up to each morning. The English level at the hotel was great for Kyoto standards. Facilities are limited (expected for a boutique hotel) and although we didn't try the French restaurant (which consistently had diners despite its hidden location), the room service was delicious - especially the Screen curry. The staff were always friendly and courteous and were very helpful with explaining Kyoto's transport system - easy once understood but initially rather difficult for the foreign tourist. Although a bit of a walk into the main strips of central Kyoto, it's a nice stroll past the city's huge range of cafes, restaurants and boutique stores. An absolutely stunning city - will certainly return to the Screen on our next trip.

Stellar Service, Location, and Rooms”
From the moment we walked into The Screen, we knew it was something special. Upon arriving, Mr. Makoto Ota brought us to the hotel's bar and had us served a drink--well needed after just coming in from Tokyo with our heavy bags! After asking how our trip has been up to that point and going over the reservation, he showed us to our room and gave us a grand tour. The room (#203) is beautifully designed and every bit like the photos on their website show. No detail was spared, from the Japanese sweets to the modern stylings everywhere. During our two-night stay, if we needed service of any kind, the staff was right there to help without question. From restaurant recommendations to taking delivery of our bags sent from Tokyo via Yamato, there was never a problem. The rooftop deck was private and well-lit the night we took advantage of it, and having drinks brought up while enjoying the Kyoto air was a nice touch. My wife and I will definitely be staying here again when we visit Kyoto. It's practically in a league of its own.

Screen ”
The staff at the screen were welcoming and helpful from the minute we walked in the door. Even small requests (like two regular coffees rather than one regular one decaf) were remembered every day. The room was large, luxurious and well appointed with plenty of gadgets and a VERY comfortable bed. We were lucky enough to see a few of the other rooms and it was great to see the individuality of the designs. The hotel can also provide bikes, which was a fantastic way to see Kyoto. Being able to ride the bike straight from the hotel made for some fun days of sightseeing. All together a enjoyable stay.

Nice boutique hotel in a quiet, convenient area”
Very nice place. We were looking for a boutique hotel in Kyoto, and The Screen fit our requirements at a fair price. Unfortunately, we had to shorten our trip, and management wasn't able to refund the second day on such short notice. I don't blame them for that -- terms were disclosed up front, and we were prepared to eat it. BUT, they upgraded us to a really nice, HUGE suite for the time that we were there. Really, they went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. (4 for Food/Dining: Though we didn't eat there, there does seem to be a full-service restaurant, and we had a drink in the bar while checking in.)

Stylish hotel, comfortable room, great service”
My stay at the hotel was very enjoyable. We were given the Cherry Blossom-themed room. Although the design wasn't very special as compared to other rooms, it was very stylish, spacious, clean, and nicely presented. The bed was big and comfortable. We are able to see the street view (including the shrine across the street) from the large windows. The bathroom was very spacious with jacuzzi, amenities were of 5-star standard as well. We were greeted by very attentive staff with fluent English, and were offered a welcoming drink and snacks. I would like to try other themed rooms from the Screen Hotel during my next trip to Kyoto!

Very modern hotel, positive vibe and able staff”
Our stay at The Screen hotel was excellent in all respects. The hotel is boutique, high standard of amenities in both the rooms and bathroom. Nothing too much trouble for any of the staff. High level of service and English well spoken and understood. The location is excellent for sightseeing in Kyoto and central for access to parks, markets and general shopping. Would recommend to all our friends visiting this region of Japan and well worth a few days to relax and enjoy the facilities the hotel offers.

Fantastic hotel, lovely staff”
We found a great deal through Agoda for this hotel, otherwise it may've been a little outside our price bracket. It's definitely worth a few extra $$ though. A delightful boutique hotel with great staff, rooms are very large and each one is different. Lots of good bath products and new tea sets each day. The location is good, situated in a charming, quiet street just near the Imperial Palace Gardens. It's not central Kyoto, but we loved the area and you can walk or cycle to many of Kyoto's sights. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area.

lovely people , great location ”
the screen hotel is a strong contrast in its modern design to the norm of traditional kyoto . the rooms are of good size , well appointed with electronics and toiletries . furniture design is strange as we had a great wardrobe but no drawers for storing clothes . needed more hangers as just 3 is not good for a couple staying for 3 nights . there was no sofa , but a supposed " forest " with a sloping carpet , which was strangely cool . the staff is more than wonderful . very helpful and kind . location is superb , next to the imperial palace ,walking distance from the shopping area . slightly longer walk to gion - with its shops , restaurants and geisha houses . only breakfasted at the hotel and it was delicious . the rooftop bar /restaurant is a bit desolate would recommend it for its service .

Great hotel, friendly staff, amazing neighborhood”
we stayed in japan for 8 night (5 in tokyo, 3 in kyoto) and the 2 nights we spent at the screen hotel were the best. again the staff was really great; super friendly and super helpful. the rooms were large considering it is japan where the rooms are usually smaller and the interior design was very nice. one of the best aspects of the hotel was the location. it is in a quiet neighborhood though a comfortable walk to a main shopping area. there were a number of great restaurants in walking distance.

The screen hotel - Salvatore Barbiera room”
The Screen Hotel is a very nice hotel located just next to the old imperial palace in Kyoto. It s close to the central district of kyoto where shops and activities are located. The service is very good and very careful to make the stay as good as possible. The room of Salvatore Barbiera is spacy, with wonderful bathroom, own sound system to plug any music source like an own iPod. The room is slightly disapointing in the noise from outside probably coming from air condition and the window insolation were quite bad. As in Kyoto in december it's chilly.

Little boutique gem in Kyoto”
The Screen offered great value for money, the suites are very spacious with great amenities and facilities. We loved the contemporary Japanese interiors and the location on Teramachi Street is only about a 15 minute walk down to the main shopping district and Ponto-cho/Gion area. We also enjoyed exploring the shrines, art galleries and antique shops on Teramachi Street. Service was great and although the staff did not speak very fluent English, we could communicate quite successfully with them and get what we needed. A few subway stations within 10 minutes walk of the hotel, though we did catch a cab from Kyoto station to the hotel because of our luggage. It was about 15 minutes in the taxi costing around 1,200-1,500 yen. Overall, a great stay and we will certainly stay there again when we return to Kyoto.

Incredible Value”
We had a wonderful stay at the Screen in one of the semi-suite rooms. The room was spacious, clean, and bright, with a huge bathroom and a comfortable sitting area. We had a great view of the shrine across the street through the floor to ceiling windows. The staff was helpful and friendly, carrying our bags and hailing multiple cabs for us until they found a driver who could take us to our next, more obscure destination. We were able to leave our bags after checking out, and they even loaned us umbrellas for the day. When one of them broke due to our own carelessness, they accepted it back graciously without hassle. Overall, the service and stay at the Screen were even better than expected. This hotel is a hidden gem, well located for strolls down Teramachi-dori, and an incredible value. I cannot recommend them enough! And book on Agoda to save a bundle over the price on their website.

we had a great stay at the screen. the hotel had a positive 'vibe' about it. the staff were very obliging and could'nt have been more helpful. both the bed and bath rooms were very spacious and well designed with all features one needed. the restaurant was good with a large choice of food and beverages - western as well as japanese.the area adjacent to the restaurant also had a casual bar area the reception/lounge area for relaxing worked well, with complimentary wifi. overall, a good location and a great hotel to stay and enjoy kyoto.

Friendly Staff, Modern Hotel with good design”
The Screen is a modern hotel with unique design in different rooms. The bed is extremely comfortable. The staff is very helpful and tried the best to explain the transportation in kyoto to tourists. The only deficiency in hotel is the lack of facilities, e.g.gym room, swilmming pool.

Great restaurant, good location”
Stay was pleasant. Room was nice, although for a hotel that markets itself as a boutique design hotel, there was nothing interesting about our particular room design -- very very basic. Bathroom had some design flaws, as it was very difficult to avoid flooding when using the shower. They tried to remedy this with some raised tiles beside the sink and shower -- this helped somewhat. The Bron Ronnery restaurant was fantastic!!!!! Really amazing food!!!! The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Review Of The Screen Hotel In Kyoto”
We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at this neat little (13 rooms?) modern hotel located centrally to all the many Kyoto "must see" sights. Each room was allegedly designed by a different designer and is very attractive. The staff was extremely attentive to every wish. The neigborhood is delightful to walk around with many interesting shops. The Imperial Palace grounds are just across the street. Delightful!

Exceptional service and design”
We had a truly exceptional experience at the Screen Hotel. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful, and interacted with English speaking clients with ease. The concierge went far beyond the typical level of service. My wife broke the heel of her shoe while we were sight-seeing. The concierge offered to take the shoe to a repair shop that same day. She picked up the repaired shoe the following morning prior to our check out. It was in new condition and was repaired for a very fair price. That level of service is unusual and greatly appreciated. We were traveling during the fall when the leaves were changing and the city was filled with visitors. The staff helped us arrange reservations at wonderful restaurants and helped assure that we arrived easily on time. The room was large, comfortable, and sophisticated.

For somthing different...this is the place to stay”
We stayed in the Rainforest Room and were absolutely amazed at the size and decor of the room. Terrific bathroom and dressing area. Great flat screen on the wall. Restaurant food was wonderful though portion sizes were very small. Rooftop bar was great. If you're looking for something different, quirky and fun in Kyoto...The Screen has it all!

Very cool hotel. ”
Loved it. We stayed in the black room, which was spacious, luxurious and pretty seductive really! Huge room, huge bed, great bathroom- the Jacuzzi bath was perfect after a day exploring temples. Location is excellent, on a lovely street that feels very quaint and charming. Altho achingly hip, the hotel is really chilled with a nice feel to it. Staff were warm, very helpful, if we were ever back in Kyoto, I'd want to stay here.

The Screen is worth it.”
Thanks to the Screen staff for making our Kyoto stay so memorable. The service was top notch, the room was perfect with great amenities. We got to the hotel in the evening, had a drink up on the roof top bar, and enjoyed the fabulous room. The location is perfect, right across from the old palace grounds. Easy Easy Easy. I would go again.
