A superb, unparalleled experience”
What makes this review difficult to write is that I don't have much to compare it to, because it has blown just about every other travel stay I've had out of the water. The staff gave a warm, helpful welcome, and went out of their way to help us try to book taxis for an early morning ride by calling all the taxi companies, something we could not do due to our poor Japanese skills. The accommodations were clean, hospitable, spacious, of course with a great view of the river right outside the window. The open-air onsen was phenomenal, and as someone who does not feel like they relax easily, I was taken by surprise by how relaxing it was. As the inn seemed to have a relatively few number of rooms, the atmosphere was calm and we did not have any problems finding time for the shared private onsen. I did not know what to expect from the kaiseki, but it was a luxurious fine dining experience. Every dish was creative, with interesting ingredients and a wide variety of great tastes. It was in a private dining room with attentive service by the staff; a great atmosphere. Scheduling an early morning leave was a terrible mistake on our end, because we missed breakfast. Staying here was a highlight of our trip. I would wholeheartedly recommend Hakone Nanase, and it is definitely on my list for when I come back to Japan.
Nice hotel”
Our family was greeted by the staff immediately upon arrival; The staff was helpful with our questions. Stayed two nights with the meal plan. The twin room is a bit small for three people. The Kaiseki inspired dinner and Japanese breakfast were put together with lots of thoughtfulness. The food was delicious but I wish they offer other options. It was nice we got to use the private open air Onsen. But the first bath from the elevator was too hot. The second one was just right. Didn’t try the indoor shared bath; It looked steamy when we first checked it out. The room is clean and the beds are comfortable. My husband likes the pillows the most. Location is easy to access; there is a bus stop right outside the hotel. We didn’t use their free shuttle service. Overall our stay was a pleasant one.
4 star in some not in others”
This hotel is rated as 4 stars, hence why we booked. Our expectations travelinv with ny kid based on amenities were onsen on site, restaurant on-site, good service and clean rooms. First the good, night 1 we were in Japanese style room, it was great clean and loved the theme. We asked for an upgrade for a charge for 2nd night and got moved to room with an onsen tub in the room. It's Western style with carpet and bigger room. I thought it didn't appear as clean but yay to getting it. The night we arrived the restaurant apparently was full and they couldn't accommodate us inside or offer room service, so the staff offered to drive us one way and leave us at a place to fend for ourselves. Tha felt they offered a ride was well appreciated. The sheets were good loved the sound water from outside. The bad, the second night room was stained in places , mold on ceilings but that's to be expected with 24hr steam. They couldn't accommodate the us in restaurant for any meal for the whole stay which is odd for a 4 star restaurant. We couldn't book directly so meals weren't included. Finally they drove us one way and said, hope you find something knowing I had a 8 year old and at night. So I'm not sure of a 4 star rating for the hotel class. And the restaurant took a day off. Location is a bit inconvenient for doing anything fro. Getting to hakone lake or finding food or drinks. I would stay close to Lake or close to gora Station next time.
